Extra Points: Dolphins, Chargers, Perryman

Dolphins 2015 second-round pick Jordan Phillips may not be in the team’s long-term plans, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald writes. At one point this offseason, Phillips was being talked up as a key part of the team’s defensive line. Now, he’s practicing as the No. 3 defensive tackle behind fifth-round rookie Davon Godchaux.

There’s still time for Phillips to play with more consistency and passion and earn a starting job alongside Ndamukong Suh, but not everyone in Miami expects that to happen. If he continues trending downward, Jackson hears he won’t be in Miami for the long haul.

Here’s more from around the NFL:

  • Chargers linebacker Denzel Perryman will be out 8-10 weeks after getting surgery to repair his torn ankle ligament, sources tell Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (on Twitter). That timeline would put Perryman on track for a mid-season return. Perryman suffered the injury in Sunday night’s preseason game.
  • Bills wide receiver Jordan Matthews has what the team is calling “a chip fracture in his sternum” and is week to week, Adam Schefter of ESPN.com tweets. For now, it sounds like the newly-acquired receiver is not in danger of missing games, but it’s a situation to keep an eye on.
  • The Cowboys are working out wide receiver Corey Washington for the second time in training camp, Todd Archer of ESPN.com tweets. It might not be long before he is signed.

Dolphins Work Out Rey Maualuga

The Dolphins are taking a look at linebacker Rey Maualuga, according to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald. He’ll be one of a handful of linebacker auditioning for Miami on Wednesday. "<strong

Maualuga, 30, spent eight seasons with the Bengals before being released in March as a cap casualty. He was a serviceable starter for most of his tenure in Cincinnati, but he was on the field for only 326 snaps in 14 games last year. He rated as the third-worst linebacker in the league, per Pro Football Focus’ advanced metrics.

Still, it’s possible that the USC product could turn things around this year and the Dolphins want to leave no stone unturned after losing two linebackers to season-ending injuries. Without Koa Misi and Raekwon McMillan, the Dolphins could definitely use reinforcements.

Panthers, Thomas Davis Agree To Extension

The Panthers and Thomas Davis have agreed to an extension. It will be a one-year, $6.75MM add-on for 2018, a source tells Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (on Twitter). The new pact also gives him an additional $2MM guaranteed for the coming year plus $1MM guaranteed in 2018.Thomas Davis (vertical)

Davis, 34, started in all 16 games last season and led all Panthers defenders in snaps. He proved that he has plenty of good football left as he tallied 106 tackles, three interceptions, two fumble recoveries, and a touchdown.

Many believed that Davis would get the extension he was seeking once GM Dave Gettleman was fired and Marty Hurney was brought back in as the GM on an interim basis. Hurney insisted that this time around, he would not allow his emotional attachment to players to dictate his business decisions. Davis and Hurney do have history together, but Hurney believes that this was the right move to make from a football and business perspective.

Davis is coming off of his second consecutive Pro Bowl appearance. Last year, he graded out the 39th best linebacker in the entire NFL, according to Pro Football Focus. If he can continue to play at that level, the extension will prove to be a win for Carolina. If he declines in 2017, the Panthers can escape the deal pretty easily.

Jets’ Lucky Whitehead Suffers Broken Foot

Lucky Whitehead has not had good fortune this offseason. The wide receiver suffered a broken foot in practice, coach Todd Bowles told reporters. Lucky Whitehead (vertical)

Whitehead made national headlines earlier this summer when a case of mistaken identity led to an arrest warrant and his release from the Cowboys. The Jets used their high waiver priority to snag Whitehead after he was dropped by Dallas and, at the time, it seemed like he had a pretty good chance of making the team. Unfortunately, his injury will sideline him for a good chunk of time, meaning that he will not be on the Week 1 53-man roster.

In theory, Whitehead’s injury could help 2016 seventh-round pick Charone Peake and other wide receiver hopefuls in their bid to make the cut. However, the Jets may want to look out-of-house for a return specialist who can offer what Whitehead would have brought to the table.

No Suspension For 49ers’ Marquise Goodwin

Marquise Goodwin may have run afoul of USADA’s drug testing guidelines for Olympians, but he is in the clear as far as the NFL is concerned. The 49ers released a statement on Tuesday explaining that Goodwin will not face punishment from the league. Furthermore, Goodwin shed light on what exactly happened with the testing agency. Marquise Goodwin

Never in my life have I failed a test,” Goodwin said in a statement. “I have never been opposed to testing and, in fact, have always been compliant with each and every protocol and policy associated with my competitive career in track and field. More than a year ago, I decided to cease competing in the sport in order to concentrate 100 percent on my NFL career. Therefore, I discontinued all practices associated with competing in track and field, including submitting my ‘whereabouts’ information. It appears that because I did not inform USADA of my plans, my name was inadvertently included in their 2017 testing pool. I greatly appreciate the support of the San Francisco 49ers and the National Football League as I work to clarify this matter.

After signing a two-year deal with the 49ers in which he could make up to $8MM, Goodwin has little motivation to buck the NFL in favor of track and field. The Niners have big plans for him too and he currently profiles as the team’s No. 2 receiving option, behind Pierre Garcon and ahead of Jeremy Kerley.

With the Bills, Goodwin totaled 49 catches and six touchdowns over four seasons. He set career highs last year with 15 appearances, 29 catches, 68 targets, and 431 yards. He also matched a personal watermark with three touchdowns.

Kirk Cousins: I Want To Stay With Redskins

Even though he turned down an extension offer from the Redskins in favor of playing on the franchise tag for the second year in a row, Kirk Cousins says he wants to remain with the Redskins for the rest of his career. Kirk Cousins (vertical)

I would love to be . . . a Redskin the rest of my career,” Cousins told ESPN’s Sal Paolantonio (transcription via PFT). “When you look at the best of the best, those quarterbacks played with one team. And if you point to a couple guys who didn’t, who changed teams, it really was against their will: I think if Joe Montana or Peyton Manning had their way they would have stayed where they had won Super Bowls and played so well. They wouldn’t have played so well. So my desire is to stay with one team my entire career, and that would be Washington.”

There were rumors throughout the offseason that Cousins was unhappy in Washington and unwilling to stay in the long term. If Cousins is telling the truth here and not just being positive for the sake of keeping the team distraction-free, then the Redskins may be able to keep him with a market-value offer next offseason. If he really wants out, however, then he can hold the line and force the Redskins to either let him test the open market or give him the ultra expensive third franchise tag.

In late July, roughly 77% of PFR readers predicted that Cousins would not be a member of the Redskins in 2018.

Dolphins CB Tony Lippett Out For Season

Dolphins cornerback Tony Lippett is lost for the season, coach Adam Gase told reporters on Tuesday morning. The third-year pro suffered a torn achilles during practice on Monday and doctors confirmed the team’s worst fears soon after. Tony Lippett (vertical)

Last year, Lippett started in 13 games for Miami. This year, he was slated to play a big role once again, though he would have been behind Xavien Howard and Byron Maxwell in the pecking order.

He jumped up, came down, no one touched him,” Gase said (via the Sun Sentinel). “Anytime you lose a guy that has started [games] for you last year, it’s not ideal. But that’s why we’ve collected the depth we have. That’s why we’re trying to get young players to go because this is what happens. We have to just keep developing these young players and that’s why every year we’re drafting a guy or when we get to college free agency, we feel like we found a couple of guys this year. We just want them to keep proving it to us. We feel like we’re pretty deep there and we just have to keep getting these guys better.”

Indeed, the Dolphins are a bit deeper at cornerback than they were in April. The Fins drafted Clemson product Cordrea Tankersley in the third round of this year’s draft and added veteran Alterraun Verner in July. The Dolphins could still consider out-of-house options (including big names like Darrelle Revis) as training camp winds down, but they might also be able to stand pat.

This has been a rough few weeks for the Dolphins, who have watched four starters suffer serious injuries. Before Lippett’s injury, quarterback Ryan Tannehill and linebacker Raekwon McMillan suffered season-ending ACL tears. Meanwhile, offensive guard Ted Larsen will be out for a while with a torn biceps muscle.

Vikings, Texans Interested In Tramaine Brock

Tramaine Brock‘s market is heating up. The Texans and Vikings are now among the teams with interest in the free agent cornerback, Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com (Twitter links) hears. La Canfora adds that it is “very likely” he will sign somewhere this week. Tramaine Brock (vertical)

Brock is already meeting with the Seahawks and Seattle is very serious about signing him after four months of investigative work into the domestic violence allegations against him. After charges were dropped against Brock and his alleged victim characterized the incident as a verbal dispute rather than a physical one, teams seem to be more comfortable with the idea of adding him to the roster.

The Texans have been putting an emphasis on causing turnovers and Brock, who has eleven career interceptions, can help with that pursuit.

One of the things we talked about as soon as we got back for OTAs is creating turnovers,” cornerback Kareem Jackson said (via ESPN.com’s Sarah Barshop). “We feel like as a defense unit, that’s our job, to create turnovers. If we can improve on that as well as continue to get better in some of the other defensive categories and situational football, [we will] continue to progress as a group.”

Brock, 28, has been a full-time starter in each of the past two seasons. Last year he graded out as the league’s No. 23 corner while playing 95% of San Francisco’s defensive snaps, according to Pro Football Focus.

Eagles Release RB Ryan Mathews

The Eagles are finally cutting Ryan Mathews. The running back was released on Tuesday morning after receiving medical clearance, the team announced.

The Eagles decided to move on from Mathews months ago, but they have been waiting for him to first get the green light on his injured neck from team doctors. Had the Eagles released Mathews before getting medical clearance, they would have had to pay him $1.15MM in injury protection. Instead, he’ll count against the cap for just $1MM in dead money while saving the club $4MM.

We want to thank Ryan for his contributions to the Philadelphia Eagles over the past two seasons,” the team said in a statement. “We spoke today and had a productive conversation about his future and the direction of our team going forward. First and foremost, we are glad that Ryan is healthy and has been cleared to return to football activities, but given the current state of our running back position, we feel like it is best for both sides to go in a different direction. We wish him all the best as he continues his career.”

Mathews‘ season ended in December when he suffered the painful neck injury. Even with that injury plus the MCL sprain he was dealing with, he still managed to turn in a decent season. In 13 games, he had 661 yards off of 155 carries for an average of 4.3 yards per attempt. He also had eight rushing touchdowns plus 13 catches for 115 yards.

With Mathews out of the picture, the Eagles plan to use Blount, Darren Sproles, and Wendell Smallwood as their top backs. Fourth-round pick Donnel Pumphrey and Byron Marshall are also pushing to make the 53-man cut.

Top 30 NFL Trade Candidates

While the NFL isn’t a trade-happy league like the NBA or MLB, deals are becoming more common as each season progresses. Draft pick swaps will always dominate any listing of NFL trades, deals involving veteran players aren’t as rare as they once were. Seven trades involving veteran players have occurred since the draft ended — at this time last year, only one such deal had gone down. As Jason Fitzgerald of Over the Cap noted in his excellent salary cap book, Crunching Numbers, trades are likely to become ordinary as front offices are taken over by younger, more out-of-the-box thinkers.

The players listed below as trade candidates aren’t ranked in any specific order — rather, we’ve attempted a league-wide look at players who could conceivably be on the move in the coming weeks or months. Contract status, overall ability, scheme fit, age, and coaching staff alterations all play a role in value, and each trait was factored into the likelihood of an individual player being dealt.

As always, you can find PFR’s complete list of 2017 NFL Trades right here.

Quarterback

Although the Bengals haven’t openly shopped A.J. McCarron, they haven’t completely sealed off the idea of dealing their backup quarterback. The asking price is extremely high, however, as Cincinnati reportedly wants a first-round draft choice for McCarron. An unidentified team offered a second-rounder for McCarron this offseason, and the Bengals declined, an indication of the value the club places on McCarron."<strong

Most likely, Cincinnati will need an injury to strike — and a club to get desperate — in order to meet its demands. In 2016, for example, the Vikings shipped a first-round pick to the Eagles in exchange for Sam Bradford after incumbent signal-caller Teddy Bridgewater went down. That situation presented the perfect opportunity for Philadelphia to reap compensation for Bradford, as Minnesota was a contending team with an immediate need under center. Bradford offered much more NFL experience than does McCarron, so a trade of the Bengals No. 2 quarterback remains unlikely.

Brock Osweiler, meanwhile, has a chance to act as the Browns’ Week 1 starter, but he’s not a long-term option for a club that used a second-round pick on DeShone Kizer. Cleveland has already rejected at least one trade offer for Osweiler this offseason, but it simply doesn’t make sense for the team to retain him on their roster. Having already acquired a second-round choice in exchange for taking on Osweiler’s contract, the Browns should convert most of his base salary guarantee into a signing bonus (thus reducing the cap hit for any interested parties) and send him to a quarterback-needy club.

Running back

New coaching staffs and pending free agency are key factors in labeling a player a trade candidate, and Carlos Hyde fits into both those buckets. Reports near the draft indicated the new 49ers regime wasn’t sold on Hyde, who has just one year left on his rookie contract, and the club has added several running backs this year, including free agent Tim Hightower and draft choice Joe Williams. Squarely in the midst of a rebuild, San Francisco has no reason to hold onto Hyde if it doesn’t plan to re-sign him, and early indications are Hyde hasn’t been offered an extension."<strong

Charles Sims could play a key role for the Buccaneers while Doug Martin is suspended for the first three games of the season, but his long-term role with Tampa Bay is unclear. General manager Jason Licht said earlier this year that Martin “looked as good as [he’s] ever seen him,” and I’d guess Martin will reclaim the Bucs’ starting job once he returns. Until that point, Tampa Bay could probably get by with a committee of Jacquizz Rodgers, Peyton Barber, and Jeremy McNichols if it decides it can get a draft pick for Sims, who is scheduled for free agency in 2018.

There are enough teams around the NFL looking for depth at running back that each of these backs should be able to create some sort of trade market. Speculative fits: Jeremy Hill, Giants; Hyde, Ravens; Matt Jones, Lions; Sims, Steelers; T.J. Yeldon, Chargers.

Wide receiver

Despite being selected 29th overall just two years ago, Phillip Dorsett appears to be in danger of not earning a Colts roster spot. He’s behind former undrafted free agent Chester Rogers and free agent signee Kamar Aiken on Indianapolis’ depth chart, and new general manager Chris Ballard doesn’t have any allegiance to the former Miami wideout. Eric Galko of the Sporting News (Twitter link) suggested the Jets — who recently lost Quincy Enunwa for the year — could be a fit for Dorsett, while the Bills, 49ers, Panthers, and Browns also make some deal of sense.
