After a brief period without trade activity, the wheeling and dealing on Day 3 resumed once the Jets and Cowboys completed a trade. Gang Green traded the No. 191 pick to the Cowboys, who used it to select Louisiana Tech safety Xavier Woods.
Dallas surrendered a 2018 fifth-rounder to make the move up 20 spots into the early portion of the sixth round, David Moore of the Dallas Morning News tweets. This will not cost the Cowboys their sixth-round pick, at No. 211, with the 2018 fifth-rounder being enough to entice the Jets to accept the deal.
Woods joins Byron Jones, Jeff Heath, 2016 sixth-rounder Kavon Frazier and recently signed Robert Blanton as Cowboys safeties.
The Broncos traded a seventh-round pick for the second time today, using this one as ammunition to trade up to the Packers’ No. 172 slot and select Georgia wide receiver Isaiah McKenzie. The Packers will receive the Broncos’ No. 238 pick in addition to Denver’s No. 175 selection, Cameron Wolfe of the Denver Post tweets.
McKenzie continues a second- and third-day run on skill-position talent for Denver, which selected wideout Carlos Henderson and tight end Jake Butt prior to adding the Georgia talent.
Henderson and McKenzie will join a Broncos receiving corps that has been an incredibly top-heavy operation the past two seasons, with scant production accompanying the work of Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders. The likes of Bennie Fowler, Jordan Taylor and underwhelming former second-round pick Cody Latimer stand to return and vie for spots against Henderson and McKenzie, who are both sub-6-footers. McKenzie is just 5-foot-8 and could be a punt-return candidate after being deployed to great success in that role throughout his Bulldogs career. He scored six return touchdowns in his three-year Georgia tenure, with five of those coming on punt returns.
The Eagles have traded down in this fifth round for the second time, this time moving out of the No. 164 slot and opening the door for the Dolphins to move up and select offensive lineman Isaac Asiata out of Utah.
It’s a two-pronged trade between these teams. The Eagles also unloaded the No. 194 pick to the Fins, Adam Schefter of ESPN.com tweets. They will receive pick 166 and the Dolphins’ compensatory selection (No. 184) that doubles as the fifth round’s final pick.
Philly initially held pick No. 155 but dealt it to the Titans to begin this mini-spree.
The Browns traded up for the second time today, acquiring the Jets’ No. 160 selection. They took Florida State offensive lineman Roderick Johnson after making the move. The Browns traded pick No. 181 (fifth round) and pick No. 188 (sixth) to the Jets to make the move. They also received pick No. 224 from the Jets in the swap (Twitter link via Jeff Schudel of The News-Herald).
Cleveland also made a deal with Denver earlier today to acquire the Broncos’ fourth-round selection, along with a seventh. The Browns traded two fifth-rounders for that right. They selected cornerback Howard Wilson from Houston in the fourth.
These moves come two days after the Browns traded out of their No. 12 overall spot, with the Texans moving up 13 spots for the right to draft Deshaun Watson. The Browns then took Jabrill Peppers before trading back into the first round and adding receiving tight end David Njoku.
The 6-foot-7 Johnson will join former Seminoles teammate Cameron Erving on the Browns’ line, one that’s been partially remade via additions of Kevin Zeitler and J.C. Tretter this offseason.
The Titans traded up with the Eagles to select UCLA linebacker Jayon Brown. Tennessee gave up a sixth-round pick (No. 214) and its fifth-rounder (No. 164) for the right to move up nine spots to 155 and take Brown, Jeff McLane of Philly.com tweets.
Brown is coming off back-to-back 90-plus-tackle seasons, with 2016 ending with 119 and seven for loss. He will join a Titans team that’s boasted some continuity there in recent years, with each of its incumbent starters — Derrick Morgan, Brian Orakpo, Wesley Woodyard and Avery Williamson — having started there for at least the past two seasons in Tennessee’s 3-4. Williamson, though, stands to be a UFA after 2017.
Randy Gregory is believed to have failed yet another drug test, with TMZ reporting the Cowboys defensive end tested positive for marijuana for the seventh time since entering the league. He’s already surpassed the one-year suspension stage of the NFL’s drug program and now runs the risk of an indefinite suspension.
Some close Gregory associates spoke with TMZ and said they are worried about his well-being. TMZ reports the 24-year-old defender tested positive on Feb. 21 and was notified of such a result on March 2.
The website also reports Gregory’s listed agent, Deryk Gilmore, no longer represents him. More people close to Gregory told TMZ his career could well be over. Gregory also reportedly brushed off league officials who tried to discuss his situation with him.
The Cowboys drafted Taco Charlton in the first round to help a thin edge-rushing contingent, one Gregory was slated to be part of when the team selected him in the second round in 2015. He’s notched just 15 career tackles and one sack, which came in Dallas’ Week 17 game last season.
Looks like Kansas City is moving up once again. The Chiefs have acquired pick #139 from the Vikings, according to ESPN.com’s Ben Goessling (via Twitter). Minnesota will receive a pair of fifth-rounders (picks #170 and picks #180).
With their new draft pick, the Chiefs selected wide receiver Jehu Chesson. The offensive weapon spent four seasons at Michigan, where he served in a variety of roles. This past season, Chesson hauled in 35 catches for 500 yards and two touchdowns. He also added another 63 rushing yards. His best collegiate season came in 2015, when he finished with 919 all-purpose yards and 11 scores.
The Eagles have moved up in the fourth round. According to Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press (via Twitter), Philadelphia has acquired pick #132 from the Vikings. Jeff McLane of The Philadelphia Inquirer tweets that Minnesota acquired pick #139 and a seventh-rounder (#230).
The Eagles ultimately used the pick on running back Donnel Pumphrey. The San Diego State product had four productive collegiate seasons, rushing for over 1,000 yards on three different occasions. 2016 was arguably his most productive season, as Pumphrey ran for 2,133 yards and 17 touchdowns on 349 carries. He also hauled in 27 catches for 231 yards.
The Browns have acquired the No. 126 pick from the Broncos, tweets Mike Klis of 9News. Cleveland will select cornerback Howard Wilson (Houston).
