2017 NFL Draft News & Rumors

Air Force Changes Rules For Athletes

The Air Force Academy decided just before the NFL draft it will not allow its athletes defer two years of active duty to immediately join a pro team, according to Nicki Jhabvala of The Denver Post (via Twitter links). The rule change immediately impacts Air Force wide receiver Jalen Robinette, a draft hopeful. Jalen Robinette (vertical)

The Air Force notified Academy officials (Thursday) that the service would not approve requests to waiver active duty military service commitments for cadet athletes,” the Academy said in a statement (via Yahoo Sports). “Cadets will be required to serve two years active duty prior to entering Ready Reserve status, which would permit their participation in professional sports. “The Air Force places tremendous value on our cadet athletes and their contributions to the nation as we continue to build leaders of character, engage in combat operations overseas and continue to ensure our highest military readiness at home.”

Last year’s update to the Department of Defense policy allowed service academy players to fulfill their duty requirements on reserve status instead of active duty. However, the Air Force said that it would evaluate each situation on a case by case basis. Today’s news is likely disappointing for Robinette since he has been readying himself for the NFL all year.

Dolphins Deal No. 223 To Buccaneers

The Dolphins made an intrastate trade late in the draft, dealing the No. 223 pick to the Buccaneers. Tampa Bay gave Miami its seventh-round pick this year (No. 237) and its seventh-round choice next year, Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald notes (on Twitter).

With the higher pick, the Bucs selected USC defensive tackle Steve Tu’ikolovatu.

Cowboys Trade No. 211 To Patriots

The Cowboys and Patriots agreed on a sixth-round deal, one that will send Dallas’ No. 211 pick to New England, Charean Williams of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram tweets.

UCLA offensive tackle Conor McDermott will join the Patriots as a result of the exchange, per Doug Kyed of NESN.com (on Twitter). McDermott is the second tackle the defending Super Bowl champions have taken this weekend, with the UCLA talent being set to accompany Troy tackle/guard Antonio Garcia to Massachusetts. All four of the Pats’ picks have been linemen thus far.

The Cowboys collected Nos. 216 and 239 from the Patriots.

Bengals Acquire Titans’ No. 207 Choice

The Bengals traded up with the Titans into the No. 207 slot to draft Houston safety Brandon Wilson, Jim Owczarski of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports (Twitter links).

Moving up to draft Wilson will require the Bengals to send their No. 217 choice — the penultimate sixth-round selection — and a seventh-rounder, No. 227, to Tennessee, Paul Dehner Jr. of the Enquirer tweets.

Wilson is the first defensive back the Bengals have selected during what’s been a secondary-fueled weekend across the league.

Redskins Trade For Vikings’ No. 199 Pick

The Vikings and Redskins made a sixth-round deal, with Minnesota trading the No. 199 selection to Washington, Ben Goessling of ESPN.com tweets. Minnesota also sent a seventh-round choice, pick No. 230, to Washington and will receive the Redskins’ seventh-rounder (No. 220), Goessling notes (on Twitter).

Washington moved up two spots to select Wyoming center Chase Roullier, Master Tefatsion of the Washington Post reports (on Twitter). The Redskins have former third-round pick Spencer Long entering a contract year, doing so as former longtime snapper Kory Lichtensteiger retired.

Jets Trade No. 191 To Cowboys

After a brief period without trade activity, the wheeling and dealing on Day 3 resumed once the Jets and Cowboys completed a trade. Gang Green traded the No. 191 pick to the Cowboys, who used it to select Louisiana Tech safety Xavier Woods.

Dallas surrendered a 2018 fifth-rounder to make the move up 20 spots into the early portion of the sixth round, David Moore of the Dallas Morning News tweets. This will not cost the Cowboys their sixth-round pick, at No. 211, with the 2018 fifth-rounder being enough to entice the Jets to accept the deal.

Woods joins Byron Jones, Jeff Heath, 2016 sixth-rounder Kavon Frazier and recently signed Robert Blanton as Cowboys safeties.
