Browns Trade CB Justin Gilbert To Steelers

1:10pm: The Browns will receive a 2018 sixth-rounder for Gilbert, per a club announcement.

12:44pm: We have not just a trade alert, but an intra-divisional trade alert. The Browns are trading former first-round cornerback Justin Gilbert to the Steelers, a source tells Adam Schefter of ESPN.com (on Twitter).

Gilbert, whom the Browns chose eighth overall in the 2014 draft, is one of five first-rounders Cleveland used from 2012-14. None of the players they chose are currently on their roster, as Field Yates of ESPN tweets.

An ex-Oklahoma State Cowboy, Gilbert struggled mightly as a member of the Browns, with whom he appeared in 23 of 32 possible regular-season games and made only three starts. Just nine of those appearances and one start came last year for Gilbert, who amassed 10 tackles and failed to record an interception.

Still only 24, Gilbert will now join contending Pittsburgh, where he’ll attempt to realize his vast potential. The Steelers already have a couple of recent high picks among their top corners in the form of two 2016 selections – first-rounder Artie Burns and second-rounder Sean Davis. William Gay and Ross Cockrell are likely to start, as Roster Resource shows.

Jets To Keep Four QBs

The Jets are likely to retain all four of their quarterbacks, reports Adam Schefter of ESPN (Twitter link). That means roster spots will go to Ryan Fitzpatrick, Geno Smith, Bryce Petty and rookie Christian Hackenberg.

As the starter, Fitzpatrick was a shoo-in all along. So was Hackenberg, whom the Jets chose in the second round of this year’s draft. Questions surrounded Smith and Petty, though cutting or trading the former would have left the Jets without an experienced backup. Petty, meanwhile, was a fourth-rounder just a year ago, so it’s not surprising that New York is hesitant to move on from him. He did leave the Jets’ preseason finale with a bruised shoulder, but head coach Todd Bowles said afterward that he didn’t suffer any structural damage.

Jets Cut Jace Amaro, Others

Reilly, a seventh-round pick in 2014, played in 29 games for the Jets over the past two seasons. He finished the 2015 campaign with 16 tackles, one sack, and one forced fumble. As Slater notes on Twitter, the linebacker was waived with an injury designation. The 28-year-old could land on the injured reserve, but the reporter doesn’t believe the injury to be that serious.

There was a chance that Morris could carve out a role among the Jets’ defensive backs. However, the three-year veteran couldn’t do enough to beat out Dexter McDougle or Kevin Short. Meanwhile, there was some optimism that former CFL linebacker Freddie Bishop could establish himself, but the team’s linebacker depth proved to be too much to overcome.

On the offensive side of the ball, Sudfeld’s tenure in New York appears to be over. The 27-year-old collected only ten catches for 148 yards over the past two seasons.

In related news, the Jets may be making an addition to the roster before the weekend is through. Former San Francisco guard Ian Silberman worked out for the Jets on Friday, as Adam Caplan of ESPN.com tweets.

Broncos Working To Trade Mark Sanchez

The Broncos are working to trade Mark Sanchez as the 53-man deadline approaches, a source tells Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (on Twitter).Mark Sanchez (vertical)

Denver has announced that Trevor Siemian will be under center when the Broncos open the season in Week 1. As such, it’s unlikely that Sanchez is a fit for the Denver roster unless he’s the backup signal-caller. With first-round pick Paxton Lynch pushing him for that role, Sanchez’s cap hit isn’t palatable for a No. 3 QB.

While Siemian is only due to earn a minimum salary during the upcoming season, Sanchez is scheduled to count $4.5MM on Denvers’ salary cap, $1MM of which is guaranteed. Sanchez can also earn another $3MM through incentives, but the Broncos could clear $3.5MM off their books by trading him before the start of the season.

Vikings Acquire Sam Bradford From Eagles

12:00pm: If the Vikings make it to the NFC Championship game, the 2018 conditional fourth-rounder headed to the Eagles will turn into a third-rounder, tweets ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter. If the Vikings win the Super Bowl, the pick will become a second-rounder.

10:23am: The 2018 fourth-round pick that the Eagles are receiving can become a third-round pick or even a second-round choice, depending on how Bradford performs with the Vikings, Albert Breer of NFL.com (on Twitter).

Bradford’s deal includes a $1MM escalator if he plays 90% of his team’s offensive snaps in 2017, Ben Goessling of ESPN.com notes (on Twitter).

The Vikings now have a capable and experienced quarterback to step in after Teddy Bridgewater suffered a devastating knee injury earlier this week. Many have criticized the Vikings for not having a quality backup behind Bridgewater, but they have found a respected signal caller to lead the way. However, it remains to be seen if Bradford can pick up the offense with less than a week to go before the season opener. Ultimately, the Vikings felt better about Bradford learning the playbook on short notice than having Shaun Hill under center, despite his familiarity with Norv Turner‘s system.

The Vikings have given up a significant haul to acquire Bradford, who ostensibly would only be their starter for one year while Bridgewater is sidelined. However, the former No.1 overall pick is signed through the 2017 season and that does give the Vikings some insurance in case Bridgewater is not ready to go for the start of next season. Also, if Bradford performs well this year and Bridgewater comes back healthy, the Vikings could find a healthy trade market for Bradford and recoup some of what they sent to Philly.

The Eagles have already paid Bradford his $11MM signing bonus, but they are now off the hook for the remaining $7MM in 2016. In 2017, Bradford will carry a $22.5MM cap number with a $13MM base salary.

With Bradford out of the picture, the Eagles will turn to either Chase Daniel or rookie Carson Wentz to start at QB to begin the season. Daniel, who has a history in Doug Pederson‘s offense, is more likely to get the nod.

The trade reunites Bradford with his old teammate at Oklahoma, Adrian Peterson. Bradford set new career-highs in 2015 with a 65.0% completion percentage and 3,725 yards passing. He also tossed 19 touchdowns against 14 interceptions, leading the club to a 7-7 record in his starts.

Redskins Cut Jenkins, Paulsen, Down To 53

Cullen Jenkins‘ short tenure in Washington has come to an end. After having signed with the Redskins earlier this week, the veteran defensive end has been cut by the team, according to Mike Jones of The Washington Post (via Twitter). The 35-year-old has been in the league since 2004, and he started 14 games for the Giants in 2015.

Logan Paulsen (also reported by Jones) is another notable cut by the Redskins. The tight end has been on the squad since 2010, although a toe injury kept him off the field last season. Entering 2016, he found himself buried on the tight end depth chart behind Jordan Reed, Niles Paul, and Vernon Davis. The 29-year-old compiled 53 catches, 575 yards, and four touchdowns between the 2012 and 2013 season.

Rookie Matt Ioannidis wasn’t necessarily expected to play a large role on this year’s Redskins team, but most expected the fifth-round pick to make the squad. The defensive end was attempting to switch to defensive tackle, writes Jones, but the rookie “struggled with consistency.” The team ultimately opted for veteran Kedric Golston and undrafted rookie Anthony Lanier. Jones tweets that the defensive lineman should pass through waivers and land back on the Redskins’ practice squad.

The Redskins are now down to the 53-man limit several hours before the deadline. Here is the full list of the players that have been cut:

Texans To Activate J.J. Watt

The Texans have decided against keeping Duane Brown on the PUP list to open the season, as Mark Berman of FOX 26 tweets. In related news, the Texans are expected to activate J.J. Watt, Aaron Wilson of The Houston Chronicle tweets. The defensive lineman has made a speedy recovery from surgery to repair a herniated disk. J.J. Watt

Watt, 27, has never missed a regular season game in his five-year career. It sounds like that streak will stay alive, at lesat for now. In each of the last four seasons, Watt has earned Pro Bowl and First-Team All-Pro selections, solidifying himself as one of the most terrifying defensive players in the league.

Last year, Brown graded out as the 16th best tackle in the NFL out of 77 qualified players. Brown earned a strong 86.0 grade for his pass blocking with a less impressive 70.4 score for run blocking. By leaving him off the PUP list, the Texans are leaving open the possibility that Brown may be ready before Week 7. However, he will not be in the lineup Week 1.

Texans Cut Cecil Shorts III

The Texans have cut wide receiver Cecil Shorts III, according to Mark Berman of FOX 26 (on Twitter). Running back Akeem Hunt has also been shown the door, and ESPN’s Josina Anderson tweets that defensive lineman Brandon Dunn has been waived.Cecil Shorts (vertical)

Last year was Shorts’ first season in Houston and he compiled 42 catches for 484 yards and two touchdowns. Shorts also returned 11 punts, his first special teams action since 2011. For his efforts last season, Pro Football Focus ranked him 90th among 121 eligible receivers. Before joining the Texans, Shorts spent four seasons with the Jaguars. His best season came in 2012, when he caught 55 passes for 979 yards and seven touchdowns. Following the 2014 season, Shorts joined the Texans on a two-year, $6MM deal.

At one point in time, Shorts had a chance to be the team’s third wide receiver, sitting behind DeAndre Hopkins and rookie Will Fuller.

Thanks to the departures of Shorts and Hunt, along with the bevy of players who received their walking papers yesterday, the Texans were already close to finalizing their 53-man roster.

The team officially announced the team’s roster moves, which included a new addition in linebacker Eric Lee.

Vikings, Eagles Have Discussed Bradford Trade

The Vikings and Eagles have discussed a possible trade involving quarterback Sam Bradford, according to Adam Caplan of ESPN.com (on Twitter). However, the Eagles are not looking to move him.

The Eagles, of course, traded up to the No. 2 overall pick in this year’s draft to select Carson Wentz. They also spent significant money to sign former Chiefs quarterback Chase Daniel. However, Bradford is slated to be under center for Philly when the season gets underway in just over a week. It’s not surprising to hear that the Vikings called on Bradford in the wake of Teddy Bridgewater‘s season-ending injury, but it’s also not surprising to hear that the Eagles have turned down the Vikes.

Bradford, acquired a year ago by Chip Kelly‘s Eagles in a trade with the Rams, has had his ups and downs in 14 starts for Philadelphia in 2015, but his overall numbers have been solid. The Oklahoma product set new career-highs with a 65.0% completion percentage, and 3,725 yards passing. He also tossed 19 touchdowns and 14 interceptions, leading the club to a 7-7 record in his starts.
