Pats Try Out Glenn Gronkowski, Others

There could be a second Gronkowski on the Patriots’ roster soon. The club worked out free agent fullback Glenn Gronkowski, brother of superstar tight end Rob Gronkowski, on Monday, ESPN’s Adam Caplan reports (Twitter link). As of now, there’s no indication the team plans to sign “Baby Gronk.”

The younger Gronkowski signed with the AFC East rival Bills this year as an undrafted free agent from Kansas State and cracked their Week 1 roster, but the team cut him after its opening loss to the Ravens.

Joining Gronkowski in auditioning for New England were seven other free agents, per Mike Reiss of ESPNBoston.com (Twitter link) : running back Storm Johnson; tight ends Rory Anderson and Austin Traylor; defensive tackles Brandin Bryant and Trevon Coley; and defensive backs Jamell Fleming and Doran Grant. Of that septet, only Johnson, Fleming and Grant have seen NFL action. Fleming easily possesses the most experience, having appeared in 46 regular-season games with the Cardinals, Jaguars and Chiefs from 2012-15. Fleming, on whom Arizona once used a third-round pick, appeared in all Kansas City’s games last year, though he didn’t play a significant role with the team.

Notably, no quarterbacks tried out for the Patriots on Monday. With Jimmy Garoppolo hurt and third-round rookie Jacoby Brissett set to start, wide receiver Julian Edelman – a former high school and college quarterback – could be the Pats’ backup Thursday against Houston. Earlier Monday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that New England wasn’t planning on signing any signal-callers before its tilt with the Texans, who are also 2-0.

Latest On Bills’ Offense

After the Bills fired offensive coordinator Greg Roman on Friday, head coach Rex Ryan insisted that it was his decision. However, there were reports that team ownership actually spurred the move. Bills owner Terry Pegula dismissed that notion in a text message to the Associated Press on Monday, writing, “We do things together like any well run org would. Head coach runs the team and staff.”

Pegula and his wife, Kim, did hold a meeting with members of the Bills’ offense Friday. That meeting did not include Ryan, who reportedly wasn’t pleased with his absence. He downplayed that Monday, though.

“That happens all the time,” Ryan said of meeting between owners and players (via Mike Rodak of ESPN.com). “I feel fortunate that our owners — I mean, they talk to our players, they talk to everybody. I can tell you this: I’m in full support of our owners. At the end of the day, it really doesn’t matter, does it? They own the football team. They don’t have to get permission to talk to anybody, myself included. I have no problem with it whatsoever. In fact, I think it’s a real positive thing for us.”

Among the players at the meeting with the Pegulas was the Bills’ top receiver, Sammy Watkins, who hasn’t been much of a factor during the club’s 0-2 start. While battling a foot injury, Watkins has amassed just six catches for 63 yards on 11 targets. The third-year man didn’t reveal much about the meeting to the AP, only saying that it centered on ways for the entire team to improve.

A report Saturday indicated that Bills players are pleased with the dismissal of Roman, whom the team replaced with assistant head coach/running backs coach Anthony Lynn. One thing that won’t change with Lynn is the language of the offense, according to Ryan.

“I think the spin on the offense is going to be immediate,” he stated. “Some things that we’ll do from a tactical standpoint, I think we’ll see immediately. Change in the verbiage and playbook and all that stuff, we’ll pull from the same playbook. There may be an occasional play here and there, but it’s still gonna be — we’re definitely keeping the verbiage and everything else that’s already in place.”

Under Lynn, the Bills hope to “showcase” quarterback Tyrod Taylor, Ryan said Friday. He also called Taylor a “rare talent.” The Bills signed Taylor to a six-year, $92MM contract extension in August, but they’ll be able to escape it relatively unscathed during the winter if they’re unhappy with his performance.

Randy Gregory Drops Suspension Appeal

Cowboys defensive end Randy Gregory withdrew the appeal of his 10-game suspension for multiple violations of NFL’s Substance Abuse policy, sources tell Adam Schefter and Todd Archer of ESPN.com (on Twitter). Gregory, who is in the midst of a separate four-game ban, will be suspended through Week 14. Gregory will be eligible to return in Week 15. Randy Gregory (Vertical)

Gregory, 24 in November, exited rehab last week. While he can return to the Cowboys this season, it’s not a given that he will take the field if he is not in football shape. Over the next month or two, we should get a better idea of where Gregory stands.

Gregory dealt with an ankle sprain early in his rookie season and we didn’t see a ton of action from him in 2015. From a talent perspective, Gregory was considered to be one of the draft’s best talents. However, his off-the-field issues caused him to sink all the way to No. 60, where Dallas grabbed him.

Lions Release Andrew Quarless

In August, the Lions signed Andrew Quarless with the idea that he could help the team on the other side of his two-game suspension. Oddly enough, on the week where Quarless is finally eligible to return to action, the Lions announced that they have released him. Andrew Quarless

The Lions signed Quarless at a time when they were unsure about the status of starter Eric Ebron. Fortunately, Ebron has been healthy thus far this year. The Lions will forge ahead with Ebron as their main tight end with Cole Wick, Khari Lee, and Orson Charles in support.

Quarless, 28 in October, spent most of the 2015 season on the Packers’ injured reserve. An MCL injury sidelined Quarless for about two and a half months, limiting him to five games and just four receptions for 31 yards for the season. He was probably hoping to take the field against his former team this Sunday, but he won’t get that chance now.

Redskins Place Kedric Golston On IR

Kedric Golston is done for the year, Redskins coach Jay Gruden told reporters (Twitter link via Mike Jones of The Washington Post). In a related move, rookie defensive tackle Matt Ioannidis will be called up from the practice squad. Kedric Golston (vertical)

Golston signed a one-year, $1MM deal with the Redskins this offseason. Unfortunately, the nose tackle’s season is already over after he went down with a strained hamstring on the first play of Sunday’s game against Cowboys. The Redskins will now rely on Ziggy Hood as their primary nose tackle, though the Redskins other options for depth.

Over the last ten years for the Redskins, Golston has appeared in 142 games with 53 starts. Ioannidis, a Temple product, was selected in the fifth round of this year’s draft. It was a surprise to many when he didn’t make the 53-man roster, but he passed through waivers and the Redskins were able to re-sign him to the taxi squad. We’ll find out now how NFL-ready Ioannidis is.

Patriots Will Not Sign A Quarterback This Week

Tom Brady is out for two more games and Jimmy Garoppolo will likely be sidelined for Thursday night’s contest against the Texans. Still, the Patriots have no plans at this time to bring in or sign another quarterback this week, sources tell ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter (on Twitter). Julian Edelman (vertical)

With no Brady, Garoppolo, or outside help, the Patriots will go into Thursday night’s contest with Jacoby Brissett as their starting QB and wide receiver Julian Edelman as their backup. Edelman, 30, was a three-year starter at quarterback for Kent State. In his senior season, Edelman threw for 1,820 yards and 13 touchdowns against 11 interceptions. Despite his years of experience under center, it has been several years since he has played quarterback. If Brissett is forced to exit Thursday night’s game for any reason, things could get really interesting for the Patriots.

Ryan Lindley and Matt Flynn – two QBs with experience with the Pats’ playbook – are among those available on the open market. For one reason or another, the Pats are passing on signing either one for now.

Adrian Peterson Has Torn Meniscus

Vikings running back Adrian Peterson has a torn meniscus in his right knee, coach Mike Zimmer said in a radio interview (link via Chris Tomasson of the Pioneer Press). It’s not immediately clear how long Peterson could be sidelined for and Zimmer did not rule out that Peterson might be able to play on Sunday against the Panthers. Adrian Peterson

Peterson went down in the third quarter of Sunday’s 17-14 win over the rival Packers. The Vikings managed to win in their real U.S. Bank Stadium debut, but it was a bittersweet W after Peterson went down.

As Tomasson notes, a torn meniscus is not necessarily a season-ender. Chris Johnson claims to have played much of the 2013 season with a torn meniscus and he ran for 1,077 yards that season. Of course, after Peterson struggled through the first two games of the 2016 season, it’s fair to wonder how productive the 2012 MVP can be if he plays through the injury.

Chargers Place Danny Woodhead On IR

Bad news for the Chargers as running back Danny Woodhead is done for the year. Tests revealed that the veteran suffered a torn ACL, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets. The Chargers officially announced that they are placing him on IR."<strong

Woodhead, 31, appeared in all 16 games for the Chargers last season, catching 80 passes for 755 yards and six touchdowns. He also added 336 yards on the ground off of 98 carries and three touchdowns, but it was his pass-catching ability out of the backfield that really boosted the Bolts’ defense. This year, he was expected to serve as a complement to sophomore tailback Melvin Gordon. Now, the Chargers may lean more on UDFA Kenneth Farrow and former Giant Andre Williams.

Through two games this season, Woodhead had six catches for 35 yards and one score. He also ran for 116 yards off of just 19 attempts. He is in the final year of the two-year extension he signed with the Chargers in 2014, so his future beyond this year is uncertain.

To fill his spot on the roster, the Chargers are signing wide receiver Griff Whalen. Whalen, 26, spent the offseason with the Dolphins but was ultimately cut by Miami. He auditioned for San Diego last week, leading to today’s deal.

Seahawks Lose Fifth-Round Pick

The Seahawks will lose their fifth-round pick in 2017 for violating the league’s rules regarding contact practices in the offseason, according to an announcement from the NFL. The Seahawks will also lose a week of OTAs and face a fine of $400K. Coach Pete Carroll personally will have to pay $200K in fines for his role. Pete Carroll

The NFL and NFLPA’s agreement on excessive contact in offseason workouts was breached on June 6th when Carroll’s team doled out hard hits during OTAs. This is not the first team that the Seahawks have run afoul of these regulations and, therefore, they were docked a draft choice in addition to the fines.

In this year’s draft, there were three instances of teams losing draft picks as a result of rules violations. The Patriots (first round), Chiefs (third round), and the Falcons (fifth round) were all penalized for different infractions by the league office.

Injuries For Browns’ Nassib, Erving

This has been a rough Monday morning for the Browns. Browns defensive end Carl Nassib suffered a broken hand yesterday and will undergo surgery, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (on Twitter). Meanwhile, starting center Cameron Erving suffered a bruised lung (Twitter link via Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com). Meanwhile, as we learned earlier, the Browns fear that they will be without quarterback Josh McCown for quite some time. Carl Nassib (vertical)

Nassib, a Penn State product, put himself on the NFL map in 2015 when he racked up 15.5 sacks, 46 tackles, and 19.5 tackles for a loss. Cleveland had high hopes for the defensive end after snagging him in the third round of this year’s draft, but this latest setback could keep him out for a while. Nassib suffered the injury during the second half of Browns’ 25-20 loss to the Ravens on Sunday.

There’s currently no timetable for Erving, but the expectation is that he’ll be out for at least a month. Thankfully, the center was released from the hospital earlier today. Erving was selected with the No. 19 overall pick in the 2015 draft. As a rookie, Erving appeared in all 16 regular season games with four starts.
