Saints Acquire 120th Pick From Washington

The Saints have found a way into the fourth round, as Mike Jones of The Washington Post reports (via Twitter) that the team has acquired the 120th pick from Washington. Jones reports that Washington will receive pick No. 152 and a 2017 fifth-rounder in return. The Saints will use the pick on University of Manitoba (Canada) defensive tackle David Onyemata.

Hailing from Nigeria, Onyemata was considered a fifth- or sixth-round pick by NFL.com. The 6-4, 300-pound lineman finished this past season with 50 tackles, five sacks, and 7.5 tackles for a loss. His performance earned him the J.P. Metras Trophy for the best down lineman in CIS. These are especially impressive accolades when you consider that Onyemata started playing football in 2011.

Draft Notes: Cowboys, Dolphins, Broncos

With the fourth round nearly halfway done, let’s check in on some draft whispers from around the league…

  • The Cowboys‘ gameplan for the second round was to select Oklahoma State defensive end Emmanuel Ogbah and then move up and select Notre Dame linebacker Jaylon Smith, according to David Moore of the Dallas Morning News (via Twitter). Ogbah was ultimately selected by the Browns with the first pick of the second round, and Dallas snagged Smith two picks later.
  • NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport says there was a general belief that the Cowboys would select quarterback Connor Cook with pick No. 101, leading to the Raiders‘ acquisition of the 100th pick. Meanwhile, Rapoport notes that Oakland is planning on keeping Matt McGloin and allowing the two quarterbacks to compete for the back-up job.
  • According to Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald (on Twitter), the Dolphins slapped Leonte Carroo with a “second-round grade.” Miami ended up snagging the Rutgers wideout late in the third round.
  • If Laremy Tunsil hadn’t been around at No. 13, the Dolphins would have selected UCLA linebacker Myles Jack, tweets Adam Beasley of the Miami Herald. Eli Apple, who was selected 10th overall, was also under consideration for the pick.
  • Speaking of Tunsil, ESPN’s Adam Schefter determined how much money the offensive lineman actually lost on Thursday evening (via Twitter). The Ravens were prepared to select the embattled University of Mississippi product with the sixth-overall pick, but Tunsil ended up falling to No. 13. Schefter estimates that the rookie lost nearly $7MM after having fallen eight spots.
  • The Broncos are fielding calls on several of their picks, reports Mike Klis of 9News in Denver (via Twitter). The team has a compensatory fourth-round pick (which can’t be traded), as well as two fifth-round selections.

Bears Acquire 113th Pick From Rams

The Bears have acquired the 113th pick from the Rams, tweets ESPN’s Nick Wagoner. In return, the Rams will receive picks No. 117 and 206, according to NFL Network. The Bears will use the pick to select WVU linebacker Nick Kwiatkoski.

Kwiatkoski finished last season with 11.5 tackles for a loss and four sacks. The 6-2, 235-pound defender is also listed as a defensive back, explaining his three interceptions and five passes defended. NFL.com ranked the senior defender as a fifth- or sixth-round value.

The pick has already switched hands twice this offseason. It was originally sent to the Titans in the DeMarco Murray trade. Tennessee later sent that pick to the Rams when they traded the first-overall pick (which ultimately turned into Jared Goff).

Raiders Acquire 100th Pick From Browns

The Raiders have acquired the second pick of the fourth round, 100th overall, from the Browns, reports NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport (via Twitter). Oakland used the pick to select Michigan State quarterback Connor Cook. Cleveland will receive picks No. 114 and 154, according to Vic Tafur (via Twitter).

Cook was widely regarded as the best quarterback available entering Saturday’s portion of the draft. Despite finishing last season with 3,131 passing yards, 24 touchdowns and only seven interceptions, the senior saw a drastic drop in his draft stock.

Cook entered the season as one of the top-rated quarterback prospects, but question marks surrounding his attitude led to the free fall. Penn State’s Christian Hackenberg (Jets), North Carolina State’s Jacoby Brissett (Patriots) and Southern Cal’s Cody Kessler (Browns) were among the signal-callers to seemingly pass Cook.

Cook doesn’t have a clear role with Oakland, as starting quarterback Derek Carr showed real improvements during his second year in the league.

Draft Rumors: Browns, Pats, Rams, Bears

With the draft set to kick off in less than 3o minutes, let’s take a quick look at some draft rumors from around the NFL…

  • ESPN’s Adam Schefter tweets that multiple teams are talking with the Browns about acquiring the first pick of the fourth round. Schefter believes these inquiring teams are targeting a quarterback with the pick.
  • Entering the day with five sixth-round picks, Ben Volin of the Boston Globe says it’s “likely to quite likely” that the Patriots move up to the fourth or fifth round (Twitter link).
  • With only five picks in this year’s draft, the Rams have been focusing in on potential undrafted free agents, tweets ESPN’s Nick Wagoner.
  • Chargers general manager Tom Telesco is expected to use his fourth-round pick for the first time, tweets Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune. The team’s last fourth-round pick was Ladarius Green in 2012.
  • The Bears will have seven selections on Saturday, and Rich Campbell of the Chicago Tribune writes that the organization is optimistic about their gameplan. “There’s a lot of good players in the draft tomorrow,” said general manager Ryan Pace. “And now we’ve got a lot of swings at those players.”

Extra Points: Brady, Cowboys, Panthers

Robert Kraft addressed the reinstatement of Tom Brady‘s suspension on Friday night, and the Patriots owner certainly didn’t mince his words.

“Number one, there is no finer ambassador for the game of football, and the New England Patriots, than Tom Brady,” Kraft said, via Josh Alper of ProFootballTalk.com. “We always have had, and will continue to have, Tom’s back. Especially when he’s being treated unfairly. He knows that. All the decisions that this organization and I personally have made throughout this ordeal have been focused on putting Tom in the best possible position for success.”

“Number two, I have been in constant communication with Tom over the past 16 months and we’ve had numerous conversations this past week. We are both on the same page and he knows exactly where my allegiances, and the total team’s [allegiances] are, relative to the extremely unfair discipline that he has been subjected to.”

“I share in our fans’ anger and frustration with the penalties the league has levied, and the entire process and how it was conducted. But please trust that I am always trying to do what I believe is best for this franchise, and pledge that I will always continue to do that.”

The Patriots have seemingly started preparing for Brady’s absence, as the organization selected quarterback Jacoby Brissett during last night’s third round.

Let’s check out some more non-draft-related notes from around the NFL…

  • Cowboys linebacker Sean Lee underwent minor knee surgery yesterday, tweets NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport. Expected recovery time is two weeks for the 29-year-old. The former second-round pick finished last season with 128 tackles, a career-high.
  • The Cowboys are no longer pursuing veteran defensive end Jeremy Mincey, tweets Clarence Hill of the Star Telegram. The writer notes that the team also won’t be adding former-Lions defensive lineman Jason Jones.
  • ESPN.com’s David Newton believes the Panthers will pursue a veteran cornerback following the draft (Twitter link).

Draft Notes: Vikings, Eagles, Raiders, Titans

Vikings general manager Rick Spielman traded out of the third-round last night, and the executive explained his logic to Mark Craig of the Star Tribune.

“Going through the logic on why that made sense to us or why that made sense to me to pull the trigger on that is a couple of things: Looking at the depth and the players and what our current roster looks like this year. The second point, I always try to look at what our roster and what are potential guys that are going to be coming out of contracts next year. Third, I would say is the depth on the board still left tomorrow. We feel very strongly that there are still a lot of very talented football players that we will be able to pick up and add to our roster.

“So those three things were kind of the thought process for doing the trade with Miami. In essence I get three players for the price of one, although I did bank two of those players for next year. In next year’s draft, having an extra three and and extra four gives you a lot of flexibility to move around in those early rounds, either potentially going back into the first or moving around in the second. We have a lot more flexibility next year than where I am anticipating we’re going to be picking lower in the rounds, where you don’t have as much flexibility.”

Let’s check out some other draft notes from around the NFL…

  • The Eagles selected offensive lineman Isaac Seumalo in the third round, and Les Bowen of Philly.com writes that members of the organization believe the rookie can start right away. “I think this kid can come in here and compete and give us great depth … challenge for a starting job,” Eagles coach Doug Pederson said.
  • The Raiders “big target” on day three will be a running back, tweets Jerry McDonald of the Oakland Tribune.
  • The Titans made four picks on Friday night, but ESPN.com’s Paul Kuharsky is convinced that only one of those players (right tackle Jack Conklin) will start next season. The writer wonders if he set his expectations too high, or if the organization missed out on players who could contribute immediately.
