Jets Cut Joe Mays

The Jets have released veteran linebacker Joe Mays, reports ESPN’s Josina Anderson (via Twitter). The 30-year-old was cut by the Chiefs in March, and he signed with New York back in April.

The deal was reportedly for one year at the minimum salary, with a $870K base salary, $20K first-game roster bonus, and a $60K signing bonus. The move will save the team $585K, and they’ll be left with $60K in dead money.

The former sixth-round pick only has one 16-game season under his belt, compiling 75 tackles with the Broncos in 2011. In the past three seasons, he’s made only 28 appearances (20 starts), collecting 107 tackles and one sack.

Waiving Mays would indicate that the Jets are ready to roll with Jamari Lattimore and Erin Henderson as their reserve middle linebackers.

Buccaneers Waive Patrick Omameh, Eight Others

9:42am: The Buccaneers have made another notable cut, parting ways with cornerback Isaiah Frey, per Josina Anderson of ESPN.com (Twitter link). Frey started six games for the Bears in 2013 and saw part-time action for Chicago and Tampa Bay in 2014.

9:22am: The Buccaneers were busy yesterday, parting ways with kicker Connor Barth and defensive lineman Da’Quan Bowers. They also added cornerback Tim Jennings, but they lost wideout Kenny Bell for the season.

The organization continued being active today, as Josh Alper of ProFootballTalk.com passes along some other cuts by Tampa Bay:

Omameh may be the most notable name on this list, as the former Michigan standout started all 16 games for the Bucs in 2014. Greene started six games for Tampa Bay during his two-year career, compiling 44 tackles and an interception.

Colts To Place Arthur Jones On IR

SATURDAY, 9:13am: The Colts will place Jones on season-ending injured reserve today, a source tells Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (Twitter link).

FRIDAY, 6:00pm: Colts defensive lineman Arthur Jones underwent ankle surgery to repair torn ligaments Friday and, as a result, will likely miss the entire 2015 season, tweets Jason Cole of Bleacher Report.

Jones’ short career with the Colts hasn’t gone according to plan. He was a disappointment in 2014 – his first season with the team – after signing a five-year, $33MM deal to leave Baltimore for Indianapolis, totaling 23 tackles and 1.5 sacks in just nine games (three starts). Prior to hurting his ankle last month, the fifth-year man was hoping for a bounce-back campaign. So were the Colts, who eschewed signing a big-time D-tackle or using a high-round draft pick on one this past offseason largely because of Jones’ presence, per Stephen Holder of the Indianapolis Star (Twitter link).

Given his less-than-stellar tenure with the Colts, one wonders if Jones is long for the organization. In 2016, he’ll count $5.6MM against the Colts’ cap, with that number jumping up to $7.35MM for 2017 and 2018. If the club isn’t confident he can stay on the field going forward, Jones could be released in ’16 with just $3.3MM in dead money left on Indianapolis’ cap.

Giants Cut Henry Hynoski

As part of their cutdown to 53 players, the Giants have released veteran fullback Henry Hynoski, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.com (via Twitter). The move would seem to indicate that fullback Nikita Whitlock will make the club’s 53-man squad, as Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News tweets.

Hynoski, 26, has spent the first four seasons of his NFL career with the Giants. While the big fullback only has 12 carries during that span, he’s considered one of the league’s better blocking fullbacks, ranking second in the category in 2014, according to Pro Football Focus’ grades (subscription required).

When Hynoski re-signed with the Giants back in March, his two-year deal with the team included a signing bonus worth $250K, along with a $250K guarantee on his 2015 salary. Since that contract also featured a $25K workout bonus, New York will have to carry a $400K dead money hit for 2015, with $125K in dead money on the 2016 books.

Falcons Waive Six, Roster Down to 68

The Falcons cut a pair of quarterbacks yesterday in Rex Grossman and T.J. Yates, but that wasn’t the end of the organization’s moves. Atlanta’s website announced that the team had waived six other players:

The Falcons roster is now down to 68 players. The team acquired Andy Levitre from the Titans yesterday, requiring them to cut an additional player.

Panthers Cut Brenton Bersin, Three Others

Panthers wideout Brenton Bersin was among the Panthers cuts this morning, according to Joseph Person and Jonathan Jones of the Charlotte Observer.

The former Wofford standout joined the organization last season as an undrafted free agent, and he ended up compiling 13 catches for 151 yards and a touchdown in 15 games. The 25-year-old reportedly had a solid camp, but the recent acquisition of former Seahawks wideout Kevin Norwood made Bersin expendable.

Even after acquiring Norwood, the writers note that the Panthers plan on being aggressive on the waiver wire as they look to reinforce their receiving corps. The team’s depth chart was thrown into disarray following the season-ending injury to Kelvin Benjamin.

The Panthers also let go of three other players this morning:

Washington Planning To Keep RGIII As Backup

Despite recently suffering a third-career concussion and falling out of favor with the Washington coaching staff, it sounds like the organization is planning on keeping Robert Griffin III. According to Liz Clarke and Mark Maske of the Washington Post, Washington will keep the former second-overall pick as a backup, with a source telling the writers that, “[h]e’s on our team.”

The former Heisman winner suffered a concussion against the Lions of August 20th, and a week later he was cleared to play. However, the independent neurologist changed his decision, deciding to approach the situation with caution. According to the Post, that neurologist has since “resigned from the neurological consultant program operated by the league.” He will continue to determine RGIII’s playing status.

As the 4 p.m. roster deadline quickly approaches, the organization would surely like more definitive information on the quarterback. Coach Jay Gruden said Griffin was being retested on Friday, and NFL rules say the team can’t cut or trade the quarterback until he’s medically cleared.

The writers expect Griffin to fall to third on the quarterback depth chart, behind started Kirk Cousins and journeyman Colt McCoy.

In nine games last season, Griffin finished with 1,694 passing yards, four touchdowns and six interceptions. He added 176 yards rushing.

Patriots Waive Nine, Trim Roster To 66 Players

In addition to cutting quarterback Ryan Lindley and signing cornerback Justin Coleman on Friday, the Patriots announced nine other moves, reducing their roster to 66 players. Here’s the list of players who were waived by the team, according to a team release:

  • RB Tony Creecy
  • WR Zach D’Orazio
  • WR DaVaris Daniels
  • OL Ryan Groy
  • OL Caylin Hauptmann
  • OL Chris Martin
  • LB James Morris
  • DL A.J. Pataiali’i
  • DL Casey Walker

New England also released tight end Jake Bequette from the club’s injured reserve list, making him a free agent.

The Patriots will move running back LeGarrette Blount to the reserve/suspended list for Week 1 as part of their cutdown to 53 players, so the team will have to make 12 more roster moves by today’s deadline.

Seahawks To Waive Robert Turbin

The Seahawks are waiving running back Robert Turbin with an injury designation, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets.

Turbin – who is dealing with a high ankle sprain – is expected to miss roughly five weeks, so it’s not a shoo-in he’ll be claimed by another team. Under NFL rules, a waived/injured player is free to be claimed by other teams for 24 hours. If no one bites within that period, the player reverts to his team’s IR list.

The Turbin decision comes on the heels of the Seahawks’ addition of fellow running back Fred Jackson, who is expected to be the primary reserve behind starter Marshawn Lynch. It also comes in the wake of a Friday evening report by Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com that the Seahawks have been exploring trading another backup runner, Christine Michael (Twitter link).

For now, though, it’s Turbin – not Michael – who’s on the negative side of the Jackson pickup. The 25-year-old Turbin was a fourth-round pick of Seattle in 2012. Since then, he’s amassed 928 yards on 231 carries (4.0 YPC), also adding 43 catches and two receiving touchdowns.

Extra Points: Brady, Orton, Seahawks

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady issued a Facebook statement Friday in response to Judge Richard Berman’s decision on Thursday to overturn the four-game suspension the NFL handed him for his role in DeflateGate. Here are a couple snippets from the full statement, which can be found here (courtesy of ESPN’s Josina Anderson):

“While I am pleased to be eligible to play, I am sorry our league had to endure this. I don’t think it has been good for our sport – to a large degree, we have all lost.”

“I love the NFL. It is a privilege to be a member of the NFL community and I will always try to do my best in representing my team and the league in a way that would make all members of this community proud.”

More from around the league as Saturday’s 53-man roster deadline draws closer:

  • Multiple teams – including the Jets – reached out to retired quarterback Kyle Orton this summer about a possible comeback, but he spurned their advances. Orton told Chris Trapasso of NFL.com that retirement had been on his mind for the past couple seasons, so he finally walked away from the game for good (Twitter link). Buffalo coaxed Orton out of a brief retirement last year and he proceeded to throw 18 touchdowns against 10 interceptions, giving him 101 and 69, respectively, for his career. The former fourth-round pick played for five different franchises after entering the NFL in 2005.
  • With Marshawn Lynch, the newly added Fred Jackson and Robert Turbin on the Seahawks’ running back depth chart, Christine Michael could be the odd man out. The team is exploring trade options for him, reports Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com (Twitter link).
  • The Eagles are shopping second-year cornerback Jaylen Watkins, tweets Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle.
  • The Texans are mulling signing another quarterback after third-stringer Tom Savage suffered a severely sprained throwing shoulder Thursday, Wilson writes. “It’s a discussion that we’re having, whether to go out and possibly get a third quarterback or maybe have a quarterback on the practice squad, something like that,” head coach Bill O’Brien said. “We haven’t made a final decision on that.”
