Stevan Ridley To Start Season On Reserve/PUP

As expected, the Jets will place running back Stevan Ridley on the reserve/physically unable to perform list to start the season, tweets Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News. The move ensures that the club doesn’t have to use an active roster spot on Ridley, who will be sidelined for at least the first six weeks of the season.

Ridley’s 2014 season with the Patriots was cut short, as an ACL and MCL injury suffered in Week 6 ended the running back’s year. In six games, Ridley compiled 340 yards and two touchdowns on 94 attempts, and his upside earned him a one-year contract with the Jets. However, he’s still recovering from that severe knee injury.

Ridley is the latest notable player to be removed from the Jets’ active roster today. The team has also cut defenders Jason Babin and Joe Mays, and quarterbacks Matt Flynn and Josh Johnson.

Broncos Release Tony Carter, Two Others

The Broncos have parted ways with cornerback Tony Carter (via ESPN’s Josina Anderson) and tight ends Marcel Jensen and Dominique Jones (via Mike Klis of 9News in Denver). The moves will save the team about $2.6MM.

Carter had been with Denver since 2011, making 38 appearance in four seasons. He played eight games in 2014, finishing with five tackles and one pass defended.

Cutting Jensen and Jones leaves the Broncos with only a pair of tight ends in Owen Daniels and Virgil Green. Klis believes the team will be looking to add a third tight end, a third offensive tackle, and a sixth defensive lineman following cuts.

Bengals Reduce Roster To 53 Players

After having waived defensive tackle Devon Still earlier today, the Bengals have trimmed their roster down to 53 players. The team announced the corresponding moves via Twitter.

Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform:

Burfict is the most notable of the moves, as the former Pro Bowler will leave a hole in the Bengals’ defense. The former undrafted free agent played only five games last heason, compiling 29 tackles and one forced fumble.

Eagles Reduce Roster To 52 Players

Their decision to cut Tim Tebow will make the biggest headlines today, but the Eagles have made many more roster moves, and have not only reduced their roster to the maximum 53 — they’ve gone one further, getting down to 52 players.

As Les Bowen of the Philadelphia Inquirer tweets, there’s a good chance that 53rd spot will be filled in the coming days with a quarterback. After having cut Tebow and traded Matt Barkley, the club is carrying just two signal-callers, and wouldn’t mind adding some insurance for the oft-injured Sam Bradford.

Here are the rest of the Eagles’ cuts, per a press release:

  • WR Rasheed Bailey
  • G Brett Boyko
  • G Malcolm Bunche
  • CB Randall Evans
  • TE Andrew Gleichert
  • LB Najee Goode
  • WR Jeff Maehl
  • WR Freddie Martino
  • DE Brian Mihalik
  • G John Moffitt
  • RB Raheem Mostert
  • WR Quron Pratt
  • S Chris Prosinski
  • DE Travis Raciti
  • S Ed Reynolds
  • LB Deontae Skinner
  • P Kip Smith
  • TE Eric Tomlinson
  • C/G Julian Vandervelde
  • LB Diaheem Watkins
  • CB Jaylen Watkins

Eagles Have Interest In Christian Ponder

Within the last 24 hours, the Eagles have traded Matt Barkley to Arizona and cut Tim Tebow, but the team still appears open to the idea of carrying three quarterbacks. According to Rand Getlin of Yahoo! Sports (via Twitter), Philadelphia has interest in Christian Ponder, who is expected to be cut by the Raiders today if they can’t find a trade partner.

As Getlin notes, Chip Kelly and the Eagles have always maintained that they want to put together a roster of “the best 53.” Given Sam Bradford‘s injury history, it also makes sense that the club would want some insurance at the quarterback position. Currently, Mark Sanchez is the only backup on the roster for Bradford.

NFl veterans on a roster for a team’s Week 1 game will have their salaries guaranteed, so the Eagles may decide to carry just two quarterbacks into their first regular season contest before adding a third QB later. The team could also explore including a signal-caller on the practice squad.

Browns Release Thad Lewis, Pat Devlin

The Browns have released quarterbacks Thaddeus Lewis (via WFNY’s Scott Sargent on Twitter) and Pat Devlin (via ESPNCleveland.com’s Tony Grossi on Twitter). The move leaves the team with only two quarterbacks on their roster, which indicates that Johnny Manziel should be healthy enough to back up starter Josh McCown. Former quarterback Terrelle Pryor, who is trying to make the team as a receiver, could also be considered an emergency, third-string play-caller.

Lewis signed with the Browns in March, inking a one-year contract. The 27-year-old didn’t make an appearance with the Texans in 2014, but he did start five games for the Bills in 2013.

Devlin joined the team in August after having spent three seasons with the Dolphins. Grossi notes that Devlin could return to the organization via the practice squad.

Both moves will save the Browns $585K.

Patriots Release Robert McClain

The Patriots have released cornerback Robert McClain, reports Ben Volin of The Boston Globe (via Twitter). The 27-year-old joined the Patriots this offseason on a one-year, $1.24MM deal.

The former seventh-round pick spent the past three seasons with the Falcons, and he finished last season with 60 tackles, one sack and two interceptions. With Malcolm Butler in control of one starting spot, McClain was competing with Logan Ryan, Bradley Fletcher, and Tarell Brown for snaps.

The move will free up $940K for New England, but the team will be stuck with $300K in dead money.

Titans Release Byron Stingily

The Titans have continued their cutdown to 53 players by letting go of veteran offensive tackle Byron Stingily, according to Terry McCormick of 247Sports.com (Twitter link).

Stingily, who turns 27 next week, re-signed with the Titans back in March after spending the first four years of his NFL career with the team. The former sixth-round pick, who started five games for the club last season, appeared to have a chance to win a starting job this year, with tackles Michael Roos and Michael Oher no longer in the picture. However, third-round rookie Jeremiah Poutasi looks poised to start at right tackle, with Byron Bell as the club’s swing tackle.

Stingily’s new two-year contract with Tennessee featured a $250K signing bonus, so the team will be on the hook for a little bit of dead money in 2015 and 2016.

Lions Release Kellen Moore, Joseph Fauria

The Lions will release quarterback Kellen Moore and tight end Joseph Fauria, reports ESPN.com’s Field Yates (via Twitter).

Moore, 25, re-signed with the Lions for two years this past offseason. The three-year veteran has yet to make an appearance in the NFL. The move will save the Lions close to $490K, but they’ll also be stuck with $340K in dead money. The move leaves the team with Matthew Stafford and Dan Orlovsky as the lone quarterbacks on the roster.

Fauria, undrafted out of UCLA in 2013, has compiled 24 catches for 281 yards and eight touchdowns during his career. Last year, a late-season ankle injury landed the 25-year-old on the injured reserve. The move will save the team $585, and they’ll only have about $4K in dead money.

Extra Points: Browns, Seahawks, Eagles, Bucs

Some assorted notes from around the NFL…

  • The Browns are focused on adding a veteran running back via trade, waiver claim, or signing, reports Zac Jackson of ProFootballTalk.com. Besides the uncertainty surrounding the team’s current depth at the position, the team’s veterans have also told the coaching staff that an older player could be a good influence on the group.
  • Browns coach Mike Pettine told Jeff Schudel of The Morning Journal that it would require a “leap of faith” for former quarterback Terrelle Pryor to stick around. Pryor, who is attempting to make the squad as a wideout, has battled hamstring tightness through most of the preseason. “It’s a project to take a guy who’s played quarterback for the vast majority of his football career (and try to change his position),” Pettine said. “Even if he had stayed completely healthy, I don’t know if we would have all the results in, if we would feel 100 percent comfortable even if he had gone the whole time and not gotten injured. So certainly it would be a leap of faith.”
  • The Seahawks are exploring trades for veteran safeties, reports Conor Orr of NFL.com. Kam Chancellor is currently holding out for a new contract, and Earl Thomas is just returning from injury, so the club could use some depth at the position.
  • Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com says he’d be “really surprised” if the Eagles were finished making moves (Twitter link). He passes along that they’re “open for business” when it comes to discussing trades at “numerous” positions.
  • Buccaneers defensive end Larry English suffered a “significant” knee injury during the team’s preseason finale, and Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times says the team will be eyeing the waiver wire for defensive line reinforcement. Jacquies Smith and T.J. Fatinikun are also currently struggling with injuries.
