2015 NFL Draft News & Rumors

Cardinals Acquire No. 116 Pick From Browns

After having taken Northwestern safety Ibraheim Campbell at pick No. 115, the Browns have traded their next selection. According to Nate Ulrich of Ohio.com (via Twitter), the Cardinals have acquired pick No. 116 from Cleveland. In return, the Browns will get a fourth-rounder (No. 123), sixth-rounder (No. 198) and seventh-rounder (No. 241), according to ESPN.com’s Pat McManamon on Twitter.

With the pick, Arizona will select Delaware State defensive end Rodney Gunter, according to Darren Urban of AZCardinals.com (on Twitter). He finished last season with 57 tackles and seven sacks.

Lions Acquire No. 113 Pick From Eagles

Having entered the day with no picks until the fifth round, the Lions have moved up to the fourth round. According to Jeff McLane of The Philadelphia Inquirer (via Twitter), Detroit has acquired pick No. 113 from the Eagles. In exchange, the Eagles have received a 2016 third-rounder from Detroit, according to Zach Berman of The Philadelphia Inquirer (via Twitter).

According to the Baltimore Sun’s Aaron Wilson (on Twitter), the Lions will select Auburn defensive tackle Gabe Wright. The 23-year-old will never be confused with departed defensive lineman Ndamukong Suh (or replacement Haloti Ngata), but the rookie will certainly provide some depth and reinforcement at the position.

After trading out of the fourth round, the Eagles’s next selection is in round six, at pick No 191.

Latest On La’el Collins

11:27am: According to Schefter (on Twitter), a team that had been “strongly considering” Collins will actually pass on the lineman. The writer notes that anything could now happen, perhaps indicating that Collins may go undrafted after all.

11:06am: While some members of the media expected talented offensive lineman La’el Collins to be selected on Friday evening, the LSU product since hasn’t heard his name called. That may change today, as ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter reports (via Twitter) that Collins is “likely” to be picked at some point this afternoon.

We learned yesterday that the player was considering not signing with a team if he wasn’t selected in the first three rounds. The logic behind this decision is simple; if Collins is drafted but doesn’t sign, he’d have the opportunity to enter the draft next season. If his stock improves, he could be selected earlier in 2016, and he would subsequently receive a significantly higher salary.

However, as NFL.com’s Albert Breer points out (on Twitter), Collins will not be allowed to re-enter the draft is he goes undrafted this weekend. Going undrafted seems to be the worst-case scenario for the guard, as the bonuses for undrafted free agents don’t come close to the salaries for those actually drafted.

According to NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport (via Twitter), Collins will meet with Baton Rouge investigators on Monday regarding the murder of his ex-girlfriend. Meanwhile, NFL.com’s Albert Breer tweets that the player’s attorney contacted all 32 NFL teams yesterday to “explain Collins’ situation.”

Jets Acquire No. 103 Pick From Jaguars

The Jaguars have traded their first pick of the third round, the 103rd overall selection, to the Jets, according to Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun (via Twitter). New York has used the pick to nab a quarterback, drafting Baylor’s Bryce Petty, tweets Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News.

The Jets had previously been scheduled to pick 104th, so the Jags will move down just one pick, and will acquire a seventh-rounder (No. 229) in the deal, according to the NFL Network.

Panthers Acquire No. 102 Pick From Raiders

The Raiders have traded their fourth-rounder (pick No. 102) to the Panthers, according to Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun (via Twitter). According to NFL Network, Oakland will receive Carolina’s fourth-rounder (No. 124), fifth-rounder (No. 161), and a seventh-rounder (No. 242) in return.

The Panthers used the pick to select Oklahoma offensive tackle Daryl Williams. The 6’5″, 327-pound lineman will be counted on to provide depth on an offensive line that struggled in 2014.

AFC Notes: Steelers, Ravens, Chargers

Before drafting Mississippi cornerback Senquez Golson with the 56th overall pick, the Steelers tried to move up and take Minnesota tight end Maxx Williams, tweets Mark Kaboly of the Pittsburgh-Tribune Review. The Steelers were unable to pull it off, however, and Williams ended up going 55th to the AFC North rival Ravens, who traded up to get ahead of Pittsburgh. Not surprisingly, that displeased the Steelers, according to Kaboly.

While the Steelers may not have been happy to see their division rivals land Williams, Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com (Twitter link) doesn’t think they were going to take the tight end themselves in that spot — according to La Canfora, Pittsburgh was “locked in” on Golson at No. 56.

Here are a few more draft-related leftovers from day two, from around the AFC…

  • Speaking of the Ravens, they’re eyeing some of the draft’s remaining cornerbacks, per Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun (Twitter).
  • The Chargers had discussions with multiple teams about moving down in the second round, but they decided to stay put because they wanted Miami linebacker Denzel Perryman, Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune tweets. The Bolts took Perryman 48th overall.
  • Broncos general manager John Elway didn’t consider taking a quarterback in the third round, tweets Troy Renck of the Denver Post. The Broncos instead used the 92nd overall pick on Ohio State tight end Jeff Heuerman.
  • Discussing the teams’ day two draft picks, Texans GM Rick Smith said linebacker Benardrick McKinney was the highest-rated player on the club’s board when the second round began, and added that Jaelen Strong‘s injured wrist was medically cleared by the Texans’ staff prior to the draft (Twitter links via Brian T. Smith of the Houston Chronicle).
  • Josh Cribbs became expendable for the Colts when the team drafted Phillip Dorsett in the first round, and Indianapolis released Cribbs earlier today. According to GM Ryan Grigson, the club wanted to give the veteran returner a chance to find “greener pastures,” tweets Mike Chappell of RTV6.

Browns Acquire No. 96 Pick From Pats

The No. 96 overall pick is the last pick of the day that can be traded, and the Patriots have indeed traded it, sending to the Browns. Cleveland used the selection to take Washington State defensive tackle Xavier Cooper. The night’s last three picks – including New England’s No. 97 selection – are compensatory selections, which can’t be dealt.

According to the NFL Network, the Patriots receive a fourth-round pick (No. 111), a fifth-round pick (147), and a sixth-round pick (202) in exchange for No. 96 and a seventh-rounder (No. 219).

Lions Acquire 80th Pick From Vikings

Two NFC North rivals have swung a deal. The Vikings will send the 80th pick in the draft to the Lions, reports Chris Long of 1500 ESPN (Twitter link). In return, the Vikings will receive picks 88 and 143, tweets Master Tesfatsion of the Star Tribune.

With the 80th pick, the Lions selected Stanford cornerback Alex Carter.

Extra Points: Gregory, Texans, Bengals

Here’s a look at the latest from around the NFL as the 2015 draft continues:

  • Representatives for Nebraska defensive end Randy Gregory, whom the Cowboys chose 60th overall, made it clear before the draft that he’d need significant support from his NFL team, reports ESPN’s Adam Schefter. That support is expected to include a security person and personal handler for Gregory, whose draft stock plummeted because of off-field concerns – notably marijuana use and potential mental health issues.
  • The Texans aren’t going to trade cornerback Johnathan Joseph, according to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle (Twitter link). The nine-year veteran is entering the final season of his contract, but McClain reports that his place on the team is safe.
  • The Bengals filled a need along their offensive line Thursday when they used their first-round pick on Texas A&M tackle Cedric Ogbuehi. Had Ogbuehi been gone before then, the Bengals would’ve selected Oregon’s Jake Fisher, tweets ESPN’s Chris Mortensen. As luck would have it, Fisher was still available at No. 53, the Bengals’ second-rounder, so they were also able to land him.
  • Before drafting Mississippi cornerback Senqeuz Golson with the 56th pick, the Steelers attempted to move up and grab LSU’s Jalen Collins, who went 42nd to the Falcons, reports Aditi Kinkhabwala of NFL.com (via Twitter). They also liked Utah’s Eric Rowe, whom the Eagles selected at No. 47.
  • Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht said he traded up for Hobart guard Ali Marpet because offensive line depth in the draft was shrinking, Scott Smith of Buccaneers.com tweeted. The Bucs selected Marpet in the second round after sending the 65th and 109th picks to the Colts for Nos. 61 and 128.
  • Michigan defensive end Frank Clark, whom the Seahawks chose with the 63rd pick, said he had a lot of pre-draft contact with the team, tweets Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times. Clark’s agent told him that the Seahawks “had a man crush on [Clark],” according to Condotta.
