2014 NFL Draft News & Rumors

East Notes: Manziel, Patriots, Cowboys

Here’s the latest from out of the NFL’s two East divisions:

  • ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports that the Patriots were considering taking Johnny Manziel at pick No. 29 (via the Boston Globe’s Ben Volin on Twitter). This report clashes with a leaked Pats scouting report on Manziel, which painted the quarterback in a largely negative light.
  • Cowboys owner Jerry Jones conceded that Manziel was the highest player left on Dallas’ board when it picked at No. 16, but noted that the team simply has too much invested in Tony Romo, according to Charean Williams of the Fort-Worth Start Telegram (via Twitter).
  • The Dolphins’ selection of Jarvis Landry could mean the team parts ways with Brian Hartline after the 2014 season, tweets Andrew Abramson of the Palm Beach Post. Miami could save a little over $6MM by cutting Hartline after the coming season.
  • Jace Amaro, taken by the Jets in the second round (No. 49), thought New York might select him in the first round, according to SiriusXM NFL Radio (Twitter link).
  • Eagles coach Chip Kelly agrees with the sentiment that this draft is exceptionally deep, tweets Geoff Mosher of CSNPhilly.com. “There are guys right now still on the board that we have rated in the third round that will be there tomorrow,” said Kelly.

Browns Acquire No. 94 Pick From Niners

The 49ers continue to be the most active team on the draft’s second night, having made another trade down. San Francisco has sent its 94th overall pick to the Browns, tweets Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post. According to Hubbuch (via Twitter), Cleveland gives up a fourth-rounder (No. 106) and a sixth-rounder (No. 180). The Browns used the pick to snag Towson running back Terrance West.

West, a favorite of ESPN draft guru Mel Kiper, is yet another piece added to a revamped Browns offense. At 5’11”, 223 pounds, West will likely compete with Dion Lewis and Edwin Baker for backup duties behind starting running back Ben Tate.

Jags Acquire Pick No. 93 From Pats

The Jaguars have traded up, acquiring the 93rd pick from the Patriots, tweets Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post. The Pats received picks Nos. 105 and 179 in return (Twitter link).

The Jaguars used the pick to select offensive guard Brandon Linder, tweets ESPN.com’s Michael DiRocco. Jacksonville is having a solid draft, first selecting a franchise quarterback in Blake Bortles, giving him weapons in Marqise Lee and Allen Robinson, and now adding protection up front in the form of Linder.

Texans Trade Up, Acquire Pick No. 83 From Eagles

The Texans have acquired the No. 83 pick from the Eagles, tweets Geoff Mosher of CSNPhilly.com. Houston will give up a fourth-round (101) and fifth-round pick (141) to Philadelphia for No. 83, according to Adam Caplan of ESPN (via Twitter). Notably, this is the first pick that has been traded three separate times — it had previously been owned by both the Steelers and the Browns.

Houston used the pick to select Notre Dame defensive tackle Louis Nix, per Caplan on Twitter. The selection ends a draft day slide for Nix, who was projected as a first-round pick. The Texans, under new defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel, will play a more standard type of 3-4 defense (rather than what they utilized under Wade Phillips in 2013) that requires a mammoth, space-filling nose tackle, a role that Nix played in Notre Dame’s 3-4.

Ryan Mallett Rumors: Friday

The latest surrounding the Patriots’ backup QB:

  • Before the Patriots took Jimmy Garappolo, Texans general manager Rick Smith repeated that the team had no discussions regarding a Ryan Mallett trade, per ESPN’s Ed Werder (on Twitter).
  • Werder also notes on Twitter that the Texans were considering taking Garappolo themselves in the third round. Werder adds that Houston “remains adamant” in not wanting to trade for Mallett.
  • ESPN’s Adam Schefter agrees, tweeting that he expects Mallett to remain with the Patriots.
  • However, NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport tweets that the Patriots were waiting to see if a desirable quarterback fell to them before considering dealing Mallett. With Garappolo in tow, the Pats have the leeway to move their backup QB.
  • If the Texans do acquire Mallett, they would sign him to a one-year extension, adds Rapoport (via Twitter). Mallett is currently signed only through the 2014 season.

Dolphins Acquire Raiders’ No. 67 Pick

The Dolphins have moved up to pick No. 67, courtesy of the Raiders, reports Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post (via Twitter). Miami trades picks Nos. 81 and 116 (fourth round) to Oakland in exchange for the pick (Twitter link).

The Dolphins will use the pick to select North Dakota State offensive lineman Billy Turner, tweets Andy Slater of 940 WINZ in Miami. The Dolphins are obviously aiming to improve their line play, having already selected Tennessee OT Ja’Waun James in the first round. After suffering through the Jonathan Martin/Richie Incognito drama last season, Miami added Branden Albert and Shelley Smith in free agency and is now using the draft to bring in further reinforcements.

Jags Acquire 49ers’ No. 61 Pick

The Jaguars have traded for the 49ers’ No. 61 pick, according to Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com (on Twitter). The Jags gave up picks Nos. 70 and 150 to San Francisco, tweets Ryan O’Halloran of the Florida Times-Union.

Jacksonville will select Penn State receiver Allen Robinson, adds O’Halloran (via Twitter). The Jaguars continue to add weapons for third overall pick Blake Bortles, as they already selected Marqise Lee earlier in the second round.

49ers Acquire Dolphins’ No. 57 Pick

The 49ers have traded for the No. 57 pick, courtesy of the Dolphins, tweets Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald. The Dolphins acquired picks Nos. 63 and 171 (fifth round), reports Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post (via Twitter).

The Niners traded up to select Ohio State running back Carlos Hyde, tweets ESPN’s Adam Caplan. San Francisco now boasts a wealth of talent at the RB position, as Hyde joins Frank Gore, Kendall Hunter, 2013 second-rounder Marcus Lattimore, and LaMichael James (who is rumored to be on the trading block) in the 49er backfield.

Broncos Acquire 49ers’ No. 56 Pick

The Broncos have traded for the 49ers’ No. 56 pick, tweets Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post. Denver gave up picks 63, 171 (late fifth-round), and a 2015 fourth-rounder, and, in addition to the 56th pick, the Niners traded the Broncos pick No. 242 (per Hubbuch on Twitter).

Mike Klis of the Denver Post adds (via Twitter) that the Broncos will select receiver Cody Latimer from Indiana, who will likely begin the season as the fourth receiver behind Demaryius Thomas, Emmanuel Sanders, and Wes Welker.

Extra Points: Raiders, Jets, Jags, Lions

A flurry of trade activity has dominated Day 2 of the draft — here’s the latest news from New York:

  • The Raiders had the chance to trade their No. 36 pick to the Cowboys, but they resisted in order to stay ahead of the Titans, tweets Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
  • The Jets were furiously trying to trade up with the Buccaneers to grab USC wide receiver Marqise Lee, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network (on Twitter). They feared that the Jaguars would take him and that’s exactly what happened.
  • The Jaguars attempted to trade with the Browns, hoping to move up to pick No. 35 and select Lee, reports Vito Stellino of Jacksonville.com (via Twitter). Lee, of course, ended up falling into Jacksonville’s lap at pick No. 39.
  • General manager Martin Mayhew says the Lions, worried that another team might pick Kyle Van Noy, spoke with several teams about trading up, tweets Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press. Detroit eventually acquired pick No. 40 from the Seahawks and selected Van Noy.
